Ted Doran practices civil litigation and acts as the managing partner of Doran, Sims, Wolfe & Ciocchetti. Since 2002, he has also represented the School Board of Volusia County. Long before he was appointed as School Board Attorney, Ted Doran helped found the Futures Foundation for Volusia County Schools.

The Futures Foundation for Volusia County Schools encourages business and civic leaders to support a common goal: to enhance the quality of public education in the county. Through this effort, Futures facilitates fundraising throughout the community for various initiatives, such as the Teacher Grants Program.

The Teacher Grants Program provides teachers with financial aid to purchase classroom resources. These grants empower educators by making possible the purchase of enhanced instructional materials and activities. The Teacher Grants Program can give as much as $1,000 for each application. All public school K-12 teachers and administrators in Volusia County are qualified to apply for this program.

Florida attorney Ted Doran may be best known in his community for the multimillion-dollar court awards he has brought to the state, or for his efforts as a member of the local Chamber of Commerce. Additionally, in 1985, within only a few years of earning his juris doctor, Ted Doran became one of the founding members of the FUTURES Foundation for Volusia County schools.

The primary goals of the FUTURES Foundation is threefold: facilitate greater involvement among the county’s public schools, communities, and local businesses; encourage and improve quality performances from school faculty and staff; and prepare students to join the workforce that will await them after graduation.

The first two goals are served by programs such as the FUTURES Mini-Grant, which funds enhancements to the curriculum with resources that cannot be provided by school budgets, and the Educator Intern system, which educates community leaders about the school system through on-site shadowing and invites suggestions from them in return.

Of course, the greatest emphasis is on uplifting students. For this, FUTURES offers the Take Stock in Children program for students who demonstrate excellence in the classroom as well as in their civic duties. There is also the Turn Around program to recognize and encourage students who show marked improvement in their personal and scholastic growth.

The FUTURES Foundation is now celebrating 31 years of operation and boasts many more programs, continuing to advance the mission set down by its founders to ensure a quality education for the children of Volusia County.

A founding partner at Doran, Sims, Wolfe, and Ciocchetti in Daytona Beach, Florida, Ted Doran is an attorney who loves to give back to his community. In this capacity, Ted Doran contributes to the FUTURES Foundation for Volusia County Schools.

The FUTURES Foundation’s mission is to engage leadership from businesses and government to help improve Volusia County students’ education and better prepare them for college and university. One of the Foundation’s projects is called the Turn Around program, which recognizes students who improve in terms of attendance, grades, attitude, or their level of involvement in school programs. Turn Around is intended to help prevent students from dropping out by acknowledging and rewarding their hard work.

Many of the students facing difficulties in terms of their schoolwork and behavior often don’t receive much support or positive reinforcement, and as such may be at a higher risk of dropping out. A Turn Around award may show them that hard work pays off and that they are appreciated by their communities, in spite of or even especially if they are facing particularly difficult challenges.

Winners receive a certificate and are invited to a gala dinner with their parents and community members. In 2016, 80 Volusia County students in middle school and high school received awards from the Turn Around program.

The FUTURES Foundation for Volusia County Schools was established more than three decades ago. The group connects businesses and community leaders with public schools in an effort to enhance its educational programs. Its programs consist of breakfasts that welcome new teachers, awards that recognize academic professionals, and a school matching grant program.

The latter, also known as the School District Education Foundation, utilizes funds from the Consortium of Florida Education Foundations to match money raised by public schools. In 2015, the program awarded more than $80,000, which was applied to initiatives impacting literacy and STEM education as well as teacher quality and graduation rates. Further, programs improving low performance among students were eligible for funding. Award recipients were matched dollar for dollar.
